Life is Temporary and Death May Come at Any Moment (08/30/01)

My Dear Śrīpāda ____ Mahārāja,

Please accept by humble daṇḍavat-praṇāmas. All glories to Śrī Śrī Guru and Gaurāṅga. All glories to Śrī Śrī Rādhikā-Mādhavasundara.

We have not been able to reply to your email written almost one month ago until this day because of our being very busy with the many duties given to us by our divine masters for Śrī Janmāṣṭamī, Śrī Vyāsa-pūjā, and Śrī Rādhāṣṭamī.

We have read your email below and we are happy to know that you desire to be in harmony with even the so-called Vaiṣṇavas, such as my insignificant self who have come from Mleccha-deśa, due to the great mercy of my Gurudeva, Śrīla A.C. Bhaktivedānta Swami Prabhupāda.

We also remember how we greeted you in USA when you came there the first time for preaching. Indeed, it is hard to forget a friendly relationship that has existed for 25 years. We are always happy to greet a real Vaiṣṇava with open arms and heart-felt respect, what to speak of a senior Vaiṣṇava as yourself who are also an old and dear friend of my Gurudeva.

Unfortunately, it so happens that some people in your camp did not care for our good intentions, and we soon became the object of their ridicule and criticism. You yourself have also ridiculed me in the very presence of my closest associates at least on one occasion and this was very painful for everyone. But as our Guardians have said before, “All for the good, all for the good.”

Sometimes there is abuse from those whom we once loved ‹- such may be necessary to teach us that this material world is no place for a gentleman. Sadly that has been my experience with your good self and with your mission for the past few years.

Previously, the mission of your Gurudeva and the mission of my Gurudeva were always in harmony, but unfortunately that is not true today. Since your preaching campaign began in the west several years ago, many things have been said and done to create ill-feelings in both camps. Due to the nature of things being the way they are at present, I do not think that heart-to-heart harmony between our camps will be possible again in this lifetime. We will thus have to learn to see beauty in diversity.

We appreciate very much that you have instructed your disciples not to speak ill of any Vaiṣṇava, or to bring harm to any Vaiṣṇava, even a low-born so-called Vaiṣṇava such as myself. But even today we have received an email from one of your disciple/followers who keeps regular contact with your mission and with your leading representatives. His email contained
statements fit to be spat on a dog like me. However, the devotees in my association do not have the capacity to harmonise his insidious remarks and thus they take exception and offence to that man. This man’s email not only reflects the mentality of many of your senior followers, but many devotees feel that this arrogant attitude is one that is being encouraged in your mission.

So, under the circumstances, we would have to say that your world-wide mission has no real affection towards us and to pretend that it does would be hypocritical. Given the circumstances at hand and the awkwardness of the situation ‹ I have decided to request all my disciples, friends, and followers to peacefully avoid any contact or association with your followers or with your mission.

I will have very little time in Vṛndāvana this year during Kārttika, so a meeting between us will not be possible. In my opinion, a meeting would not really yield any worthwhile fruits. I do not think that there is any misunderstanding between us. You seem to know exactly what you are doing and I, on the other hand, know that my Guardians are guiding my every step and that by their divine grace, I will be successful in this life.

What is necessary and what would be very beneficial in the Vaiṣṇava world would be to see that every Vaiṣṇava, and particularly every Vaiṣṇava ācārya, put into practice the teachings of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu. I have seen much of the world today and everywhere the Vaiṣṇavas are criticising and fighting with each other, even up to the point of physical violence. The ācāryas of various missions are glorified because they have many temples and many followers, but those followers are fighting with each other like cats and dogs and the temples are becoming places of woman-hunting, not devotion. It is unfortunate, and it is shameful to see the word ŒVaiṣṇava¹ associated with such things.

As followers of Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura, we are servants of the Œrāga-patha. Thus, we prefer to live peacefully, keeping the lotus feet of our divine masters safely above our heads, and to always engage in their divine service with all humility and our deepest sincerity, pūjala rāga-patha-gaurava-bhaṅge. That will bring us the greatest fortune of prema-bhakti ‹-always keeping the higher devotees above our heads.

We are confident that one day our Guardians will call us to their side and engage us in the eternal service of our Divine Lord of Golden Complexion. Until then, we are happy to accept whatever humble position is given to us here in this life and we wish to avoid anything that is unfavourable for the cultivation of pure devotion.

Life is temporary and death may come to us at any moment. Therefore, we wish to spend our days preaching the glories of the Holy Name of Kṛṣṇa, and filling our soul with that Holy Name. We have no interest in criticising others for some personal satisfaction, because such activities will not help us to achieve the ultimate goal of life.

If we have made any offence to Your Holiness in the course of preaching the message of our Divine Guardians, then we humbly request your good self to kindly forgive us. We should not have to go to the court of Death with the sin of Vaiṣṇava aparādha on our heads.

We hope this meets you well. Wishing you all peace and prosperity in your bhajana and preaching life.

Swami B.G. Narasiṅgha
