Observing the Passing of a Family Member (09/26/01)

My dear A____ Dāsa,
Hare Kṛṣṇa.

I have received your email below and I sympathise with the loss of your father. All of us must face death someday. I am also fifty-five years old, but nobody knows how long we will live. Therefore, we should not waste a valuable minute in this human form of life and always be engaged in the service of the Supreme Lord.

Kṛṣṇa says in Bhagavad-gītā that if one renders Him a little service, then in the next life, that soul attains the heavenly planets. If one however has rendered Kṛṣṇa a lot of service, but still one has not reached perfection, then one will be born in the family of devotees, and in the next life one will continue his devotional service immediately.

So in any case, the well-being of your departed father has already been assured by Kṛṣṇa Himself. The soul is eternal and once one approaches Kṛṣṇa it is simply a matter of time before one reaches perfection in love of God. Kṛṣṇa never forgets His devotee under any circumstances, so you should be confidant that Kṛṣṇa has arranged a better next life for your father, and that he will very soon go back to Godhead.

It is not necessary for me to give your departed father a name, because he has already entered his next body and his new life is about to begin. All this is arranged by higher authorities. But for your peace of mind you may do some auspicious activity on behalf of your father such as preparing a feast, offering it to Kṛṣṇa, inviting friends to your house, holding kīrtana, reading the Vaiṣṇava scriptures, and distributing prasadām. This is how a Vaiṣṇava should observe the passing away of any family member. If your father has left you any material wealth or property, you may also use that in Kṛṣṇa’s service and in this way some spiritual benefit will automatically go to him. Gaura Haribol!

I hope this meets you and your family in good health and Kṛṣṇa consciousness.

Affectionately,
Swami B.G. Narasiṅgha
