Who Can Chant the Gayatri Mantra (11/02//02)

Dear Kṛṣṇa Puravaja,

All glories to Śrī Guru and Gaurāṅga.

I read your email below with interest.

Actually what Iskcon says about who can chant the gāyatrī-mantra is correct. The śāstrika reference is in Padma Purāṇa:

sampradāya-vihinā ye mantras te niṣphala mataḥ

“If one is not actually connected (initiated) with a bona fide disciplic succession, then whatever mantras he chants will not bring the desired result.”

The Absolute Truth is ’Super Subjective and as such, all ‘objective endeavours’ to attain Him are hopeless. Thus the mantras to worship the Absolute Truth must be received in the subjective line of disciplic succession (sampradāya) via initiation. That is the established system of bhakti-yoga since time eternal. To chant mantras without initiation is an ‘objective’ endeavour and is never successful.

This system has been accepted by all ācaryas, saints and bona fide spiritual teachers in India. Even the Supreme Lord Himself accepts this system when He appears on Earth. Kṛṣṇa accepted initiation into chanting the gāyatrī-mantra, so did Lord Rāmacandra and also Śrī Caitanyadeva. Therefore, according to the Supreme Lord, ācāryas, and the śāstra, this system should be accepted.

I hope this meets you well.

Praṇāmas,

Swami B.G. Narasiṅgha
